Maria Aguiar is Auxiliar Professor at the School of Arts at Portuguese Catholic University (EA-UCP) and full member of CITAR. Trained as a painting conservator-restorer by the Instituto Politécnico de Tomar (BA, 1997), De Montfort University (MA, 2000) and Northumbria University (MA, 2002), dedicated her PhD thesis to the characterization of materials and techniques used by the Portuguese painter, Aurélia de Souza (EA-UCP, 2013).

She supported the creation of the Conservation and Restoration Department of EA-UCP, as Assistant to the Head of Department, to equipe conservation and scientific labs. She is member of the Portuguese Professional Association (ARP) and joined the Board of ENCoRE as deputy secretary, in 2022, while being active since 2014. Has participated on research projects related to the characterization of painted surfaces and contributed to the production of the Catalogue Raisonné of Aurélia de Sousa, launched in 2024. Her interest in education methodologies and conservation topics lead to engage her students on European Workshops about lining techniques and cleaning systems, through ERASMUS programs. She was member of the editorial team of the Ge-conservación (IIC), guest-editor of Conservar Património and peer-reviewer of conservation journals.  Since 2020, she has been working to Oporto Museum as consultant for preventive conservation of collections in storage, coordinating the project of relocation of collections and organization of the newly refurbished building – Reservas do Museu do Porto.
